Wednesday July 13th 2011 Katherine to Hayes Creek

Left Katherine and arrived at Hayes Creek Caravan Park about 11:30 a.m. It was only a short trip for a change.  This is just an overnight stay before we head into the Daly River area. We thought it would be a good idea to pre-book as most NT parks do take bookings. Wooliana Tourist Park’s brochure looked pretty good so we’re heading there for a 2 night stay and then onto Mary River Park.

Kakadu’s not far off. It’s a bit like waiting to see the Daintree; I hope it lives up to my expectations. The Daintree did! It’s one of my favourite places in Queensland.

Hayes Creek CP is hidden away in a valley surrounded by savannah vegetation. Escarpments back the park. It’s a pretty spot and there’s plenty of shade. We’re camped under a couple of mango trees that have just started to fruit. It will be a while before they’re ready for harvesting.  I know many of my friends love mangoes – my favourite mango dish is mango ice-cream.

Our first impression wasn’t good because the amenities block was literally blocked so they were out of action. Luckily for us (but not the lad who had to unblock them) they were quickly fixed.

Bobby was in the pool for a while so that’s his clean up for today. We ventured down a grass track where we found a spring not too far away. Pandanas palms bordered the edge, which was quite low. I think that in the wet, this park would be close to flooding. The reception area with the bar is located on the Stuart Highway.
