I was disappointed when we arrived at Wyndham. It’s a very tired town with many buildings in disrepair or empty. Blink and you’d miss the main drag.
from 5 mile lookout Wyndham |
The view from 5 mile lookout was spectacular and well worth the drive. We could see for miles. It overlooks the Roper River estuary with a few ships waiting to load or unload. There were large piles of red/black iron being unloaded from huge semi-trailers with 4 side-tipper bodies. This was going to be loaded on to ships tomorrow.
We checked out the caravan park and it was quite nice with plenty of shade. Don’t think we’ll be back this way and I don’t think we’d stay at Wyndham if we did return. Probably OK if you fish.
After filling up with diesel, which was only $1.62/litre, we’d heard that the local fisherman lived around the corner and sold fresh fish. Barra for tea tonight! Banana prawns and red chilli for another meal later.
Paddy’s Lagoon had been recommended as a worthwhile trip so we followed the signs along the dirt roads and came to Paddy’s Farm café and camping area. Very nice spot too. Directions to the lagoon were given but after a few kilometres on a bumpy road, we decided that we’d turn back. With the fridge in the back, it was being bumped around a fair bit and Robert was worried about damaging it. This lagoon has bird hides and a multitude of birds.
Robert’s been keen to drop his crab nets for a while but with the fresh-water crocs ready to take any bait, it’s not worth damaging the nets for nil return.
With a light breeze blowing most of the day, it’s been very pleasant.
The footy results last night have made for some excited commentators and listeners on the local ABC radio today with West Coast Eagles winning over Geelong.
